We know that our bodies carry all kinds of good bacteria.  One of these is the usually benign yeast Candida Albicans. Candida is a fungus that aids with nutrient absorption and digestion, when in proper levels in the body.  Due to a variety of factors, Candida can grow rapidly and overwhelm the lining of the intestinal tract and, at this point, Candida has become VERY unfriendly.  The toxic and acidic by-products and waste can then enter the bloodstream to be deposited in tissues throughout the body.  This compromises our immunity and even our appearance.

Candida is nearly an epidemic in our society and is responsible for many of the chronic illness categories we see so frequently. Candida symptoms are vast and all encompassing and can even incapacitate the individual.

Most people are unaware that it even exists, because most mainstream doctors are uneducated about its impact on our health. Normally Candida lives in harmony with a variety of other microorganisms and actually performs a important functions.  The problem occurs when something upsets the balance of bacteria in the body and this allows the yeast organism to proliferate and take over all the healthy microorganisms.

Candida normally resides in the intestinal tract, mouth, throat and genitals, however it can burrow holes in the intestinal tract, enter the blood stream and then make its way into any organ of the body. To make matters worse it emits over 70 different toxins into the body. Some people may even become allergic to the yeast itself.

Once this hardy organism proliferates in the body, it wrecks havoc in many ways and is the initiator of many common maladies, conditions, syndromes and illnesses.

Sprouting: Lola’s Revelation – 10 Reasons to Sprout

My crunchy vegan friends have been harping for years about sprouting.  Sprouting beans, nuts, seeds – if there was a solid crumb on the floor they’d probably snatch it up and cover it in water.  I had only half an ear cocked until I met Lola.

I met her at an art opening in Paris.  She was your basic nightmare – clear-skinned, gorgeous waist-length chestnut hair, mysterious long hooded green eyes, tapering fingers and lips so naturally plump they actually had that little line of cleavage that looks like a cleft in the chin… I was drawn to her and followed her surreptitiously while mulling my opening gambit and wondering if I had finally become a lesbian. Finally, we both lingered in front of a particularly abstract rendition of black and red chaos.  I ventured a tentative comment coupled with a flirty laugh.  She responded.  But I didn’t want to talk about the art.  I wanted to know about her canvas – her perfect skin.  What were her secrets?  It’s not as if she was 30.  She was older.  I could tell by her walk, her attitude.  This was someone that had lived.  Had I finally met another vampire? Maybe we could go somewhere and share a bite…

Like everyone Lola enjoyed a compliment.  A few more and she was ready to share.  Her secret: sprouted beans.  Lola is a vegetarian and she swore up and down about the MAGICAL results of sprouting.  She sprouts beans, nuts and seeds around the clock.  They are her protein, her vitamins, her enzymes – her glorious skin.

Ajvar – A Serbian Delicacy that Will Bring Balkan Beauty and Collagen to Your Skin

My mother always told me to never discuss my Serbian roots.  “People will think you are dangerous,” she would whisper with narowed eyes.   While it is true that the Serbs are a feisty race one cannot deny their beauty, survival skills, their passion for life and their weapon-sharp minds!

My glamorous Serbian grandmother who never went to bed without a perfectly made up face (if she died in her sleep she wanted to be found looking beautiful) always had a stash of homemade ajvar on hand.  She swore that the vitamin C in the red peppers was responsible for her impeccable complexion and wrinkle-free skin.

Ajvar is a type of relish, made principally from red bell peppers, with garlic. It may also contain eggplant and chili. Ajvar originates in the Serbian cuisine, and was therefore long known as “Serbian salad” or “Serbian vegetable caviar”. It became a popular salad (side dish) throughout Yugoslavia after World War II and is nowadays popular in the Balkans. Original homemade ajvar is made of roasted peppers, while some industrial producers use cooked peppers, which leads to a lower quality. Depending on the capsaicin content in bell peppers and the amount of added chili peppers, it can be sweet (traditional), piquant (the most common), or very hot. Continue reading
