If this post seems like an infomercial – it is. I have become wildly obsessed with Astaxanthin – a supplement I had never heard about until I discovered that it is ‘sunblock you can eat.’ As someone who has meticulously dissected all the chemicals in the average sunblock and concluded that the only non-toxic ingredient (zinc) is one that makes me look like a real vampire, I have long worn picture hats and avoided the sun from 12-2. All that has changed now that I have discovered Astaxanthin. I have been taking it for months now and am in the sun a fair bit – but no burning! And my nails have become long and strong – very unusual for me!
One of the magical vitamins I have been taking for years is magnesium glycinate. My motivation was anti-aging but, the below article by Dr. Mercola will explain why magnesium is important for SO MANY other reasons.
You don’t hear much about magnesium, yet an estimated 80 percent of Americans are deficient in this important mineral and the health consequences of deficiency are significant. One reason could be because magnesium, like vitamin D, serves so many functions it’s hard to corral.
Few nutrients possess the remarkable and diverse benefits of magnesium. It is the fourth most abundant mineral in cells after calcium, phosphorus and potassium. Magnesium is found in our bones, muscles, blood, and other tissues. It is needed by the body for energy production, fat and protein synthesis, muscle relaxation, nervous system function and calcium metabolism.
According to US Department of Agriculture data, two out of every three Americans don’t meet average daily intake requirements for magnesium, which are 300 milligrams (mg) to 420 mg daily for adults. In addition, many people have a magnesium deficiency due to stress, genetics or a medication, such as a diuretic (usually taken to control blood pressure). As a consequence, these people face an increased risk for health problems. Maintaining adequate levels of magnesium can help reduce muscle cramps, stabilize blood sugar, lower the risk for heart disease, ease migraine headaches, strengthen bones and slow the aging process. Doesn’t it make sense that the foods that maintain and enhance fertility can help regulate your hormones even beyond the fertile years? The diet for conception and pregnant women is the same diet women of ALL ages should be eating. The fertility diet is the regimen which balances the endocrine system. If you want babies but haven’t yet found Mr. Right yet or the time, start making sure your body is in prime condition by taking extra care with your diet.
Beware ladies, this is a long article. I found the information so fascinating and so relevant to anti-aging that I kept adding and adding… Rest assured, taking a moment to read this will benefit you! Continue reading
All right – who is tired of hearing about the perfection of the Brazilian butt? Superbly showcased on a little Y shaped stage (la thong) the Brazilian bottom is an invitation to both men and women to nestle in warm, pillowly plumpness. But such buttocks are not always achieved by nature alone. They are oft aided by a professional sculptor (better known as a plastic surgeon). So what the Hell do Brazil nuts have to do with Brazilian butts you demand impatiently?
In a nutshell (heheheh), Brazil nuts contains a number of minerals which build connective tissue and muscle (essential to firm butts). They also have a huge amount of selenium which does wonders for the skin. Continue reading
In order to protect cells from the degeneration and decay which lead to aging and disease it is essential that we consume a variety of foods and supplements which have strong antioxidant properties. Thanks to its high levels of proanthocyanidins, a major weapon in my anti-aging arsenal is Grape Seed Extract.
Expensive supplements, derived from pine bark, contain 85% proanthocyanidins while grape seed extract contains 95% proanthocyanidins. But what is proanthocyanidin you ask?
In the future, health care providers may hand out proanthocyanidin pills as readily as they recommend aspirin today. A steady stream of animal and in vitro studies supplemented by epidemiological evidence and a smattering of preliminary human studies reveal numerous health benefits associated with these compounds. Chief among the benefits is antioxidant protection against heart disease and cancer. Continue reading
Many women are not aware that we produce the ‘male’ hormone testosterone and how important it is to our overall health – sexual, reproductive and otherwise. If levels fall, we can age more rapidly and our bodies become weaker.
Testosterone is the principal anabolic and sex hormone in humans, responsible for sexual desire and function, muscular hypertrophy, densification of bones, and hair growth. Compared to females, males famously produce about ten times the amount of testosterone, but females are far more sensitive to its effects. Though testosterone is largely responsible for those traits and characteristics that are considered “masculine” – physical strength, body hair, dominance, and virility – both sexes require it for proper sexual and physical development. In mammals, males secrete it primarily from the testicles (about 95% of the total amount, in fact) and women secrete it from the ovaries. A modicum is produced in the adrenal glands in both sexes.
To increase testosterone naturally: Continue reading
Ever wonder what magical anti-aging potion over-educated, vain women are panting to get their hands on? Human Growth Hormone serum. The kind you can only get at a doctor’s office which is delivered by syringe and usually only available to children with growth issues. Of course, I have looked into buying HGH online and am amazed by the rich assortment of choice. However, a chemical engineer friend of mine told me that all of those products were completely bogus and potentially dangerous and unless I had access to a prescription and a syringe of the real stuff I might as well search for natural methods to increase my production of HGH – or try to summon Gandalf to help. Did you ever imagine that taking a bath could actually slow the aging process? Nor did I until a girlfriend introduced me to the wonders of Epsom Salts.
If you are anything like me, you’ve heard about Epsom Salts throughout your life but never really registered what the Hell they’re all about. They also seem to have cobwebby links to grandparents and other oldies. But in fact, Epsom Salts are back in the news as more and more film starlets and climbers admit to a soak before a strut down the red tongue of fame. Continue reading
Part of the impetus of my blog is to show women that we can age gracefully and with minimal damage if we find natural (i.e. non-chemical and non-scalpel) methods to optimize the body’s natural functioning. There is no machine more perfectly engineered than the body. Everything has a function and works well until we start flooding ourselves with chemicals that were never supposed to be there. Our consumer culture has made it difficult to resist buying products – for our skin, our mouth, our homes, our car, our air – everything. But if you want to age slowly you are going to have to return to nature.
Here are 18 foods that tighten and firm skin. Get a natural face lift while eating! Continue reading
