Are Hot Baths Aging You? Your Skin is a Sponge – Beware of What You Are Absorbing

candle_bath

To my loyal readers – apologies for my absence but I am currently trying to engineer a move…

Now, I know I am a little neurotic about water quality.   But water is critical to survival and wellness. The more I study what’s in various cities water, the more determined I am to educate everyone about the importance of water filtration. And when I say filtration, I mean filtering every tap in your house – from shower to kitchen to bath.   It’s going to take research and time, but once that system is set up you can rest assured you are doing something meaningful for your and your family’s health.

Your skin is your largest organ. When you sit in a hot bath or shower under hot water your pores are wide open because they respond to the heat.   During that time, your skin is absorbing the water and every chemical, pharmaceutical and toxin in it.   I read recently where London water has a high quantity of both pre-digested cocaine and hormones from the pill. Wonderful.   What else is in there?

From an early age, I have acclimatized my daughter to loving cold water. I did this with great calculation as cold water closes pores. Sounds crazy right?

Once you read the below article from Dr. Mercola you will think differently about that hot bath and shower you once took for granted.   In an age of increasing over-population – where people are living longer and taking more pharmaceuticals – where furniture is riddled with flame retardants and chemicals that enter the ground water once that furniture is put in a land-fill – the quality of water, our greatest resource, is hugely impacted.   Start thinking twice about buying windex or chemical cleaners for your house. Buy vinegar. Re-think how you live every day and ask yourself what you can do to lower the chemical dumping on our planet. If everyone thought like this we could all enjoy hot baths well into the future.

What do I suggest?

  • Read the below report
  • Order a water report from your city – research those chemicals
  • Look on ewg.org or start reviewing whole-home water filtration systems. Mercola sells them but I am still actively comparing them. I found a fascinating site written by an ecologist who makes water filters. He asked me to order my city water report so he can look at it and then he customizes the system. http://www.cleanairpurewater.com/
  • Put filter on the pipe going into your house and at every water exit point. Not just your kitchen – get the bath and shower set up as well.
  • Take a hot bath in peace.water

Prevent Aging and Sickness! Detox Your Body of Heavy Metals and Other Impurities Easily

Do you love sushi? Do you eat fish regularly? Do you live in a city? Do you spend time near smokers? Do you eat out at restaurants?   Do you buy food that is not organic? Do you use regular deodorants and non-organic beauty care products? Do you use chemical cleaning products? Do you drink tap water? Do you bathe or shower in non-filtered water?

If your answer to any of the above questions is yes – you are at risk for some level of heavy metal or other free radical or polluting contamination. Once your body is ‘infected’ by these pollutants – whether they be mercury, aluminum, lead, fertilizers, carbon monoxide, cadmium, parabens, ammonia (etc.) – they build up. And then? They start interrupting all your systems – hormonal, metabolic, cellular, digestive, immune you name it.   This spells: aging, sickness and weight gain.

So besides being as vigilant as possible – what else can you do? If you are not taking any serious medications (ask your doctor if you are) – invest in Zeolite. I take a huge spoonful of Zeolite in a glass of water every ten days.   Because it is highly absorbent, I do not take vitamins that day.  I have read testimonials by people who take it more often but I believe the body works well on its own if supported by a healthy lifestyle.  You know your risk factors and habits better than I.

But what is Zeolite?

Magnesium – Make Sure it is in Your Diet or Else you will –

One of the magical vitamins I have been taking for years is magnesium glycinate.  My motivation was anti-aging but, the below article by Dr. Mercola will explain why magnesium is important for SO MANY other reasons.

Dr. Mercola

You don’t hear much about magnesium, yet an estimated 80 percent of Americans are deficient in this important mineral and the health consequences of deficiency are significant. One reason could be because magnesium, like vitamin D, serves so many functions it’s hard to corral.

Few nutrients possess the remarkable and diverse benefits of magnesium. It is the fourth most abundant mineral in cells after calcium, phosphorus and potassium. Magnesium is found in our bones, muscles, blood, and other tissues. It is needed by the body for energy production, fat and protein synthesis, muscle relaxation, nervous system function and calcium metabolism.

According to US Department of Agriculture data, two out of every three Americans don’t meet average daily intake requirements for magnesium, which are 300 milligrams (mg) to 420 mg daily for adults. In addition, many people have a magnesium deficiency due to stress, genetics or a medication, such as a diuretic (usually taken to control blood pressure). As a consequence, these people face an increased risk for health problems. Maintaining adequate levels of magnesium can help reduce muscle cramps, stabilize blood sugar, lower the risk for heart disease, ease migraine headaches, strengthen bones and slow the aging process. A Mouth-Watering Anti-Aging and Anti-Inflammatory Meal You Can Make in 15 Minutes

I found this online and had to make it!  Delicious and your skin will glow like a pregnant woman after you eat it!

Raw Sweet Potato Salad with Curry Almond Sauce is a unique and refreshing salad that is perfect for those hot summer days when you can’t bear to turn on the oven or stove. I was skeptical the first time I tried a raw sweet potato salad, but I was pleasantly surprised. Raw sweet potatoes have a great crunch and fresh flavor that is far from starchy.

Sweet potatoes are packed with beta-carotene which our body converts to vitamin A. Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin that boosts the immune system, keeps the skin healthy and maintains eye health. Sweet potatoes are high in antioxidants and lower the potential health risks associated with heavy metals and free radicals as they pass through our digestive tract. They also have anti-inflammatory properties and are great for people with inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. Continue reading

Shilajit – Mineral-Dense Himalayan Mud – for Those Who Dare

This article is dedicated to the truly vain, the experimental, the Lara Crofts, the Indiana Joneses, the trail breakers, the mad scientists, the mountain-climbers, the women who wear 5 inch heels and mix their own creams and those who believe there is some magic in nature’s untouched state…  If you are conventional and believe in the FDA – stop reading now.

Now, I know I am a sucker for anything that sounds like a magical potion for anti-aging.  I know myself.  My heart beats a little faster when I read about Ormus Minerals (perfect foods like avocados, almonds, apricot seed kernels etc. – see the link at the end of this article to get some goose bumps for yourself…).  So when I overheard a yogi friend talking about his new Shilajit-fix my ears grew bigger.  The below information is from a site that sells Shilajit (http://shilajitsupertonic.info/) but I buy mine from Upaya Naturals.  I have been taking it for about a month now with no side effects and my skin looks wonderful but – I DO write an anti-aging blog so it is hard to tell if the Shilajit is making a significant impact or if my skin and health is a result of all my efforts.  (With all that I’m doing I better look 40 at 65 dammit!)

I am entranced by the idea of Shilajit because our soil is so depleted of minerals and nutrients.  Taking vitamins/nutraceuticals is an option (that I embrace) but the idea of drinking mineral and nutrient rich soil that was plucked from rock crevices far from mankind has a utopian tinge of romance sprinkled with a little Kipling no? Oh Lama where art thou? Continue reading

I Drink Volcanic Ash for Breakfast

When I was a wild cat in NYC and raising Hell on a routine basis I would cleanse myself of the intoxicants of a late night by drinking a nasty little cup of volcanic ash for breakfast.   Nowadays as a devoted yogi and mother I have little time for late nights or ‘extracurriculars’ but toxins are still flooding my system in the form of second hand smoke, truck fumes etc.  Therefore, every ten days or so I drink my volcanic ash and hold off for the day on taking vitamins or nutraceuticals.

A volcanic detoxifier—Bentonite, a medicinal powdered clay (also known as montmorillonite), derives from deposits of weathered volcanic ash. It is one of the most effective natural intestinal detoxifying agents available and has been recognized as such for centuries by native peoples around the world. Liquid clay contains minerals that, once inside the gastrointestinal tract, are able to absorb toxins and deliver mineral nutrients to an impressive degree. Liquid clay is inert which means it passes through the body undigested.

Technically, the clay first adsorbs toxins (heavy metals, free radicals, pesticides), attracting them to its extensive surface area where they adhere like flies to sticky paper; then it absorbs the toxins, taking them in the way a sponge mops up a kitchen counter mess. Continue reading

Eat Strategically: 11 Foods that Clean Your Body Naturally

Every time I choose what I am going to eat I ask myself: what can this food give back to me? If the answer is nothing (as is the case with processed foods, white starches, sugar etc.) I won’t eat it. I try to always eat strategically which is why educating oneself about food is the first step to anti-aging and better immunity.

Our bodies have a natural detox system that gets rid of toxins that it accumulates from foods and the environment. Help your body work efficiently by regularly indulging in foods that help clean it. We cannot always control our environment and food that is tasty AND detoxifies is an excellent method for battling free radicals, cell decay etc. The below are 11 natural foods that help your body eliminate toxins.  Continue reading

URGENT! Reduce the Electromagnetic Field Around You for Better Health

Having read quite a lot about the effect of radiation on the body and, having a mother who got breast cancer after having her Hodgkins treated with radiation, I have become increasingly aware of the effects of electromagnetic fields on the human body. As a ‘wellness and anti-aging consultant’ one of my focuses in detoxifying a client’s habitat and lifestyle is to try to reduce their exposure to man-made electromagnetic fields. I have made certain that my own and my child’s bedroom have absolutely no electromagnetic fields and we both sleep very well!

However, most people do not think about electromagnetic fields and it is only recently that our world has become completely over-run by them in the name of convenience and consumerism.

I was recently in Florence and met a very interesting yoga instructor who introduced me to the website of Dr. Katherina Johnson. Below, is an article she wrote on this subject. Continue reading

Bathing in Epsom Salts – A Sumptuous Indulgence that is also (strangely) Anti-Aging

Did you ever imagine that taking a bath could actually slow the aging process? Nor did I until a girlfriend introduced me to the wonders of Epsom Salts.

If you are anything like me, you’ve heard about Epsom Salts throughout your life but never really registered what the Hell they’re all about. They also seem to have cobwebby links to grandparents and other oldies. But in fact, Epsom Salts are back in the news as more and more film starlets and climbers admit to a soak before a strut down the red tongue of fame. Continue reading

Fight Aging and Cancer with an Alkaline PH – 4 Steps to Getting There

An alkaline diet may lower your risk of exhaustion, premature aging, sickness, allergies, muscle aches, joint pain and osteoporosis. A study published in 1994 in the New England Journal of Medicine found that women who neutralized their body’s acidic state with an alkalizing agent absorbed calcium and phosphorous better and increased the rate their bodies formed new bone matter.
