Food Order and Combining – Why it is Important for Beauty, Health, Energy and Weight Loss

Choosing what to eat and when to eat and what to eat it with are questions that everyone faces daily. Most of us are calorie counters following mainstream diet trends that we pick up from beauty magazines, friends or hear that our favorite celebs are following. But few of us have been educated on the importance of food sequence or food combining. For me, it was a revelation that took pounds off, increased my energy and made my skin glow! I credit the books of Natalia Rose (guru and goddess) and the incredible Kimberly Snyder. Chapeau ladies!  I wish someone had taught me these practices as a child. My daughter is reaping the benefits!

The trick is to maximize the benefits of the foods that we consume in order to gain crucial vitamins, minerals and enzymes. Proper sequential food ordering and pairing enable us to avoid diets and achieve glowing skin because this practice optimizes digestion. A glorious side effect will be greater energy and deeper sleep. The more effectively you can master this practice the less you will have to work at exercising to lose weight. Optimal digestion leads to natural skin toning!

Onions Work Wonders for Skin, Hair, Health and Fertility

Now I realize an article about onions is not terribly Christmassy or even sexy. However, throughout the holiday season, we all want to look our best and stay as healthy as possible and, despite their pungent aroma, the humble onion must not be overlooked. Actually, the onion, in my opinion, is less humble than a true member of the vegetable royalty.

I was drawn to write this article after a conversation with a Jordanian lady in Central Park. Our children were playing together and we were discussing the huge number of vaccinations the U.S. insists that children get – up from just a few in our childhood. We were both frothing at the mouth about the flu vaccination and its implications for destroying the immune system of our youth as well as our right to choose what our children’s bodies are pumped with.   She told me that when she grew up in Jordan, when children got the flu, their parents and grandparents would slice onions and put them in the feet of socks and draw the socks on the children for the night. Apparently, it is a magical solution for fever and flu. Intrigued, I was drawn to explore further and found a list of the below benefits.

(Regarding the flu shot, if you don’t want your child to get it – just find a doctor on the same page and have them tick off the form without actually injecting your child. Stories about deaths and paralysis of children from this year’s flu shot are more and more in the news.)

If you are worried about onion breath: take a shot of vodka or hydrogen peroxide (spit out the h.p.) – both kill bacteria in the mouth, brush your teeth and tongue with baking soda and floss, rinse with water, and chew parsley or mint leaves!

Note the amazingly decadent recipe at the end of this article… Continue reading

Cucumbers – A Fat Magical Wand – Wave It Inside and Out for Health and Beauty

As the summer heat wilts your skin, your smile, and your appetite, focus on cool fruit and vegetable snacks.  My favorite summer skin refresher is the cucumber.   The more I learn about cucumbers there more astounded I am by all of its magical properties. Who knew?!

Cucumbers, scientifically known as Cucumis sativus, belong to the same botanical family as melons (including watermelon and cantaloupe) and squashes (including summer squash, winter squash, zucchini and pumpkin).  I became addicted to them thanks to the innovative cooking of the Serbian grandmother of my child.  At every meal grandma serves a cucumber salad. Sometimes the cucumbers are chopped and mixed with plain yogurt, dill, lemon juice and olive oil and sometimes with mint and feta.

Cucumbers are an excellent palate cleanser and refresh the mouth and breath.  (They are also a fantastic flirtation-starter for those of you who like to send a suggestive message to the opposite sex in the vegetable aisle of the store… Though some men may wilt when faced with the more intimidating specimens of Cucumis sativus, a little fondling of the impressive cucumber may rev your engines…And who knows what could happen then?)

But why are they so magical?? Here are 30 reasons:

Rejuvenate You with these 10 Secrets for Success and Inner Peace

I went through a rough patch recently and like a typical American I reached for some self-help.  I grappled with books on Buddhism, spirituality, religion, mysticism, Deepak Chopra (my favorite man and curiously, endlessly prolific), Eckhart Tolle, Pema Chodron etc.  I underlined, highlighted, took notes, meditated and did a lot of yoga.  But one of the best summer-uppers I found on how to feel peaceful was in a book by Dr. Wayne Dyer – a biggie in the world of self-development.

This site is about anti-aging and health but I realize I have largely overlooked the arena of mental health and spirituality which has a significant impact on how we age and evolve.  If we are stressed and angry we age more quickly, become sick and can be infertile.  In life, we are taught to buy expensive creams, cars, clothes and go to the gym to look good but we have overlooked training our minds.  We can all be sorcerers, witches, and deities if we learn to control our thoughts and direct them.   We can re-vitalize our bodies and our health with our mind.  You must think of your mind as a muscle you must learn to flex daily in new directions for rejuvenation and peace.

I am happy I read all of those books because I will now consciously try to teach my child how to think and to be aware of the words which she chooses ..  I am still quite overwhelmed by all that I am learning so I thought I would let Dr. Wayne Dyer talk to you directly through my notes on his book.  I read these every morning and try very hard to stick to them though I am still re-booting my hard-drive from its deeply ingrained foundation! Magnesium – Make Sure it is in Your Diet or Else you will –

One of the magical vitamins I have been taking for years is magnesium glycinate.  My motivation was anti-aging but, the below article by Dr. Mercola will explain why magnesium is important for SO MANY other reasons.

Dr. Mercola

You don’t hear much about magnesium, yet an estimated 80 percent of Americans are deficient in this important mineral and the health consequences of deficiency are significant. One reason could be because magnesium, like vitamin D, serves so many functions it’s hard to corral.

Few nutrients possess the remarkable and diverse benefits of magnesium. It is the fourth most abundant mineral in cells after calcium, phosphorus and potassium. Magnesium is found in our bones, muscles, blood, and other tissues. It is needed by the body for energy production, fat and protein synthesis, muscle relaxation, nervous system function and calcium metabolism.

According to US Department of Agriculture data, two out of every three Americans don’t meet average daily intake requirements for magnesium, which are 300 milligrams (mg) to 420 mg daily for adults. In addition, many people have a magnesium deficiency due to stress, genetics or a medication, such as a diuretic (usually taken to control blood pressure). As a consequence, these people face an increased risk for health problems. Maintaining adequate levels of magnesium can help reduce muscle cramps, stabilize blood sugar, lower the risk for heart disease, ease migraine headaches, strengthen bones and slow the aging process. Hidden Dangers of Fluoride in Tap Water and Toothpaste

This is a fascinating article by the renown Dr. Katharina.  If you have children you should definitely take note!

Why drinking tap water and using regular toothpaste can be detrimental to your health.
Fluoride is a chemical that is added to 60% of the American water supply and frequently added to toothpaste.  While government agencies try to convince you that it is healthy for you and your children and will help prevent tooth decay, the truth is that it is a dangerous chemical that negatively impacts your health.
It is now believed that excess Fluoride in the water is linked to the epidemic of hypothyroidism (under- active thyroid) in the States and is linked to other health concerns like low IQ in children, headaches, arthritis, neurological problems and even cancer.
In fact, doctors used to treat HYPER thyroidism (over active thyroid) with Fluoride, since it suppresses the function of the thyroid. Continue reading

Ghee vs. Butter

For years, my yogi friends have been talking about the magic of ghee.  Frankly, I was only ever half listening to the conversation – until recently when I became obsessed with buckwheat pancakes.  That obsession could take up another article but suffice it to say that for the past 4 weeks I have been having a pancake a day – and it’s now one of the main reasons I get out of bed.  I could not resist having butter with my pancake but every day as I slathered it on  I began to wonder – is this healthy? Are my thighs exploding?  My pants have been feeling a little tight lately…

During a weekend prowl of the most expensive grocery store in Geneva – Globus – I came across a jar of ghee.  It cost $20 and yes – I bought it.  After spreading it on my pancake this morning, I can report: I am hooked.  (Although for $20 I think I can make it myself…) A little research brought me to this fascinating article by Delia Quigley:

Anti-Aging Vitamin Essential: Evening Primrose Oil

Evening primrose oil is a fabulous nutrient for your skin (and overall health) that you’ve probably never heard of.

Evening primrose oil comes from the seeds of a flowering plant that grows wild in North America and many other parts of the world. The flower opens at night, hence the name Evening Primrose, and its seeds have oil which has been known to have wonderful healing powers – full of essential fatty acids. Continue reading

Tap or Bottled Water? Which is Best for Your Health?

Should you drink tap or bottled water? No one REALLY knows and there are many wars on this front. Thousands of chemicals are invented yearly that are outside the archaic water protection acts passed in many countries. Those chemicals can leak into the groundwater from waste sites, agricultural fields, golf courses etc. Once it’s in the groundwater it can flow into the streams that lead into the reservoirs which lead directly to your faucets.

When I lived in NYC, a friend of mine told me that the NY state government was quietly trying to buy up business rights to lands bordering the streams leading into the city’s reservoirs in upstate NY. Why? In order to curtail the number of chemicals in toxins that are on the rise in NYC’s drinking water. I was so scared by this that I immediately put filters on all my taps – including my shower, bath and kitchen sinks. Continue reading

Oregano – A Miracle Herb for Anti-Aging and Better Immunity

Sure we all see those little green flakes in our tomato sauce and think – OK the chef didn’t forget to shake some oregano in there. But sadly, the average person does not give too much attention to this small but powerful herb. Europe made the same mistake with Napoleon many years ago…

Oregano is known as “delight of the mountains” in Greek and is renowned for its medicinal and nutritional properties. But besides wanting to swallow some ‘mountain delight’, why is oregano important for anti-aging and immunity? Continue reading
