If this post seems like an infomercial – it is. I have become wildly obsessed with Astaxanthin – a supplement I had never heard about until I discovered that it is ‘sunblock you can eat.’ As someone who has meticulously dissected all the chemicals in the average sunblock and concluded that the only non-toxic ingredient (zinc) is one that makes me look like a real vampire, I have long worn picture hats and avoided the sun from 12-2. All that has changed now that I have discovered Astaxanthin. I have been taking it for months now and am in the sun a fair bit – but no burning! And my nails have become long and strong – very unusual for me!
As the summer heat wilts your skin, your smile, and your appetite, focus on cool fruit and vegetable snacks. My favorite summer skin refresher is the cucumber. The more I learn about cucumbers there more astounded I am by all of its magical properties. Who knew?!
Cucumbers, scientifically known as Cucumis sativus, belong to the same botanical family as melons (including watermelon and cantaloupe) and squashes (including summer squash, winter squash, zucchini and pumpkin). I became addicted to them thanks to the innovative cooking of the Serbian grandmother of my child. At every meal grandma serves a cucumber salad. Sometimes the cucumbers are chopped and mixed with plain yogurt, dill, lemon juice and olive oil and sometimes with mint and feta.
Cucumbers are an excellent palate cleanser and refresh the mouth and breath. (They are also a fantastic flirtation-starter for those of you who like to send a suggestive message to the opposite sex in the vegetable aisle of the store… Though some men may wilt when faced with the more intimidating specimens of Cucumis sativus, a little fondling of the impressive cucumber may rev your engines…And who knows what could happen then?)
But why are they so magical?? Here are 30 reasons:
Do you love sushi? Do you eat fish regularly? Do you live in a city? Do you spend time near smokers? Do you eat out at restaurants? Do you buy food that is not organic? Do you use regular deodorants and non-organic beauty care products? Do you use chemical cleaning products? Do you drink tap water? Do you bathe or shower in non-filtered water?
If your answer to any of the above questions is yes – you are at risk for some level of heavy metal or other free radical or polluting contamination. Once your body is ‘infected’ by these pollutants – whether they be mercury, aluminum, lead, fertilizers, carbon monoxide, cadmium, parabens, ammonia (etc.) – they build up. And then? They start interrupting all your systems – hormonal, metabolic, cellular, digestive, immune you name it. This spells: aging, sickness and weight gain.
So besides being as vigilant as possible – what else can you do? If you are not taking any serious medications (ask your doctor if you are) – invest in Zeolite. I take a huge spoonful of Zeolite in a glass of water every ten days. Because it is highly absorbent, I do not take vitamins that day. I have read testimonials by people who take it more often but I believe the body works well on its own if supported by a healthy lifestyle. You know your risk factors and habits better than I.
Naturally, I am not referring to his ingestion of hemlock. No, this article is about apple cider vinegar or APC forthwith. APC was one of the cleansing bullets I riddled myself with throughout my hedonistic histoire in order to recover from a particularly late night – usually one of those evenings not interrupted by anything as humdrum as sleep.
The mere act of drinking APC was a penitent gesture. For me, it was (is) hemlock – minus death. But don’t let me discourage you before you read the 11 reasons you should drink it! Ironically, APC revitalizes, energizes and has all kinds of wonderful effects on the body. (Although I noted that a few ‘medical’ sites had nothing flattering to say about the humble APC. They hinted its powers are suspect.) But who can doubt Socrates? And, don’t doctors and pharmaceuticals WANT you sick if only to stay in business?
A recent trip to the U.S. brought me once again into contact with American TV commercials (when I realized the mute button on the remote didn’t work). I was dumbstruck by the sheer, endless number of ads dealing with sickness and medical breakthrough ‘cures’ and solutions. The laughably lengthy list of possible side-effects follows in a semi-whisper. Continue reading
This drink is not for the faint of heart so if you are one of those people who aren’t capable of making a big effort for beauty, youth and immunity – stop reading now.
I drink this concoction about 5x a week and yes, I gag a little during the process. My baby always watches me with great fascination while I glug back this nut-spice smoothie. But ladies, I glow, I shine and I exude health and vitality… And I might be able to crank out a baby when I am 60!
You will need a coffee bean grinder – about $20 (worldwide). Below, are the ingredients and their amazing benefits.
Put a spoonful of curcumin/turmeric, nutritional yeast, cinnamon and wheat germ in a large glass. Grind all your seeds (make certain to keep your seeds ‘oil-ripe’ by preserving in the fridge) and put in the glass. Add water and stir vigorously. Stir before every sip as well. Swallow. Because you have ground the seeds they will be more quickly and easily absorbed and digested by the body. Remember, eating solids causes the body to produce stress hormones in order to break down food…
After drinking this drink you will promptly lose your appetite for the entire day. So it is an excellent nutrition-diet (and may have laxative effects on some). Continue reading
Back in the Crazy Days of Yore, activated carbon was a major weapon in my survival kit as well as my anti-aging regimen. Its magical absorptive properties enable it to pull all kinds of toxins, poisons, free radicals etc from your body. Some say activated carbon can also absorb bacteria and fungi… If I’ve been exposed to too many cigarettes, truck fumes, sick children, pollution – I will make a little glass of black magic and feel much better about myself. How much you ask? I put 2 big spoonfuls in a glass of water and glug it back like a soldier. It’s not caviar but it’s not the worst drink I make. If you read my article on Himalayan mud and had the courage to try some you know my strength. Continue reading
Are you one of those people who hasn’t bought a jar of coconut oil yet? Are you stuck on the idea that coconut oil is a saturated fat? If the answers to these questions are yes, then you have failed to do your research!
Coconut oil is almost 90 percent saturated fat, but not all sat fats are created equal. “The saturated fat in coconut oil is mostly lauric acid, a medium-chain saturated fatty acid that appears to have a more neutral effect on heart health when compared to longer-chain saturated fats found in meats and dairy products,” says Wendy Bazilian, R.D., author of The SuperFoodsRx Diet.
This makes sense considering citizens of nations that consume prodigious amounts of coconut products, such as Sri Lanka, have lower rates of heart disease than Americans. Some research even suggests that coconut oil can paradoxically improve cholesterol numbers by revving up enzymes in the body that breakdown fats. Continue reading

Doesn’t it make sense that the foods that maintain and enhance fertility can help regulate your hormones even beyond the fertile years? The diet for conception and pregnant women is the same diet women of ALL ages should be eating. The fertility diet is the regimen which balances the endocrine system. If you want babies but haven’t yet found Mr. Right yet or the time, start making sure your body is in prime condition by taking extra care with your diet.

My mother always told me to never discuss my Serbian roots. “People will think you are dangerous,” she would whisper with narowed eyes. While it is true that the Serbs are a feisty race one cannot deny their beauty, survival skills, their passion for life and their weapon-sharp minds!
My glamorous Serbian grandmother who never went to bed without a perfectly made up face (if she died in her sleep she wanted to be found looking beautiful) always had a stash of homemade ajvar on hand. She swore that the vitamin C in the red peppers was responsible for her impeccable complexion and wrinkle-free skin.
Ajvar is a type of relish, made principally from red bell peppers, with garlic. It may also contain eggplant and chili. Ajvar originates in the Serbian cuisine, and was therefore long known as “Serbian salad” or “Serbian vegetable caviar”. It became a popular salad (side dish) throughout Yugoslavia after World War II and is nowadays popular in the Balkans. Original homemade ajvar is made of roasted peppers, while some industrial producers use cooked peppers, which leads to a lower quality. Depending on the capsaicin content in bell peppers and the amount of added chili peppers, it can be sweet (traditional), piquant (the most common), or very hot. Continue reading
