Crème Budwig – Anti-Aging and Immunity-Boosting Nectar of the Gods

I recently saw a friend in London who is minefield of information on all things holistic and healthy.  I make sure I always have pen and paper ready when I see her because she gives me so many ideas to google…

She introduced me to the famed Dr. Catherine Kousmine (1904-1992),  – a Russian (her family was well-to-do and fled the country during the Russian revolution) scientist based in Switzerland who believed in nutrition-based medicine.  Dr. Catherine Kousmine devoted her life to medical research in Switzerland, with special interest in the effects of food on overall health, and cancer and disease prevention. The Fertility Nut n’ Spice Smoothie – Drink it for Your Skin, Your Hormones, Immunity, Anti-Cancer, and Anti-Aging

This drink is not for the faint of heart so if you are one of those people who aren’t capable of making a big effort for beauty, youth and immunity – stop reading now.

I drink this concoction about 5x a week and yes, I gag a little during the process.  My baby always watches me with great fascination while I glug back this nut-spice smoothie.  But ladies, I glow, I shine and I exude health and vitality… And I might be able to crank out a baby when I am 60!

You will need a coffee bean grinder – about $20 (worldwide).  Below, are the ingredients and their amazing benefits.

Put a spoonful of curcumin/turmeric, nutritional yeast, cinnamon and wheat germ in a large glass.  Grind all your seeds (make certain to keep your seeds ‘oil-ripe’ by preserving in the fridge) and put in the glass.  Add water and stir vigorously.  Stir before every sip as well.  Swallow.   Because you have ground the seeds they will be more quickly and easily absorbed and digested by the body.  Remember, eating solids causes the body to produce stress hormones in order to break down food…

After drinking this drink you will promptly lose your appetite for the entire day.  So it is an excellent nutrition-diet (and may have laxative effects on some). Continue reading

Magnesium – Make Sure it is in Your Diet or Else you will –

One of the magical vitamins I have been taking for years is magnesium glycinate.  My motivation was anti-aging but, the below article by Dr. Mercola will explain why magnesium is important for SO MANY other reasons.

Dr. Mercola

You don’t hear much about magnesium, yet an estimated 80 percent of Americans are deficient in this important mineral and the health consequences of deficiency are significant. One reason could be because magnesium, like vitamin D, serves so many functions it’s hard to corral.

Few nutrients possess the remarkable and diverse benefits of magnesium. It is the fourth most abundant mineral in cells after calcium, phosphorus and potassium. Magnesium is found in our bones, muscles, blood, and other tissues. It is needed by the body for energy production, fat and protein synthesis, muscle relaxation, nervous system function and calcium metabolism.

According to US Department of Agriculture data, two out of every three Americans don’t meet average daily intake requirements for magnesium, which are 300 milligrams (mg) to 420 mg daily for adults. In addition, many people have a magnesium deficiency due to stress, genetics or a medication, such as a diuretic (usually taken to control blood pressure). As a consequence, these people face an increased risk for health problems. Maintaining adequate levels of magnesium can help reduce muscle cramps, stabilize blood sugar, lower the risk for heart disease, ease migraine headaches, strengthen bones and slow the aging process. The Divine Benefits of Coconut Oil, Be a Goddess – Eat Coconut Oil

Are you one of those people who hasn’t bought a jar of coconut oil yet?  Are you stuck on the idea that coconut oil is a saturated fat?  If the answers to these questions are yes, then you have failed to do your research!

Coconut oil is almost 90 percent saturated fat, but not all sat fats are created equal. “The saturated fat in coconut oil is mostly lauric acid, a medium-chain saturated fatty acid that appears to have a more neutral effect on heart health when compared to longer-chain saturated fats found in meats and dairy products,” says Wendy Bazilian, R.D., author of The SuperFoodsRx Diet.

This makes sense considering citizens of nations that consume prodigious amounts of coconut products, such as Sri Lanka, have lower rates of heart disease than Americans. Some research even suggests that coconut oil can paradoxically improve cholesterol numbers by revving up enzymes in the body that breakdown fats. Continue reading

Ghee vs. Butter

For years, my yogi friends have been talking about the magic of ghee.  Frankly, I was only ever half listening to the conversation – until recently when I became obsessed with buckwheat pancakes.  That obsession could take up another article but suffice it to say that for the past 4 weeks I have been having a pancake a day – and it’s now one of the main reasons I get out of bed.  I could not resist having butter with my pancake but every day as I slathered it on  I began to wonder – is this healthy? Are my thighs exploding?  My pants have been feeling a little tight lately…

During a weekend prowl of the most expensive grocery store in Geneva – Globus – I came across a jar of ghee.  It cost $20 and yes – I bought it.  After spreading it on my pancake this morning, I can report: I am hooked.  (Although for $20 I think I can make it myself…) A little research brought me to this fascinating article by Delia Quigley:

The Health Benefits of Ghee Continue reading

Preserve Your Skin’s Elastin and Collagen with Grape Seed Extract

In order to protect cells from the degeneration and decay which lead to aging and disease it is essential that we consume a variety of foods and supplements which have strong antioxidant properties.  Thanks to its high levels of proanthocyanidins, a major weapon in my anti-aging arsenal is Grape Seed Extract.

Expensive supplements, derived from pine bark, contain 85% proanthocyanidins while grape seed extract contains 95% proanthocyanidins.   But what is proanthocyanidin you ask?

In the future, health care providers may hand out proanthocyanidin pills as readily as they recommend aspirin today. A steady stream of animal and in vitro studies supplemented by epidemiological evidence and a smattering of preliminary human studies reveal numerous health benefits associated with these compounds. Chief among the benefits is antioxidant protection against heart disease and cancer. Continue reading

5 Reasons to Eat Sweet Potatoes for Anti-Aging and Fertility

Ah, the innocent, cheery sweet potato – a food very few of us give any thought to except during Thanksgiving or Christmas. Allow me to correct myself when I say ‘very few’ by saying that the most educated nutritionists, foodies, very vain women and ladies who want babies DO give a lot of thought to this sunny, orange root. But why you ask?

Here are 5 reasons: Continue reading

Tap or Bottled Water? Which is Best for Your Health?

Should you drink tap or bottled water? No one REALLY knows and there are many wars on this front. Thousands of chemicals are invented yearly that are outside the archaic water protection acts passed in many countries. Those chemicals can leak into the groundwater from waste sites, agricultural fields, golf courses etc. Once it’s in the groundwater it can flow into the streams that lead into the reservoirs which lead directly to your faucets.

When I lived in NYC, a friend of mine told me that the NY state government was quietly trying to buy up business rights to lands bordering the streams leading into the city’s reservoirs in upstate NY. Why? In order to curtail the number of chemicals in toxins that are on the rise in NYC’s drinking water. I was so scared by this that I immediately put filters on all my taps – including my shower, bath and kitchen sinks. Continue reading

20 Anti-Aging and Immunity-Boosting Benefits to Drinking Aloe Vera

All of us have heard about the ancient, healing wonders of the soothing aloe vera leaves. Some have used the gel as a moisturizer. But how many of you have tried drinking it?

You can buy the drinkable aloe vera juice or gel in any health or organic store. Because I was passionate hedonist, I was concerned with doing everything possible to counteract the ravages of my wild nights. “The path of excess leads to the tower of wisdom,” spouted William Blake. And ladies, part of the wisdom that kept my skin wrinkle-free (no Botox yet!) and elastic after many years of reckless naughtiness is: drinking aloe vera as often as possible. Continue reading
