After a long, cold winter many of us need to lose a few pounds to get ready for the fast approaching bikini season. We know that dairy, carbs and sugar make us gain weight. But we need something naughty to look forward to and fantasize on… Personally, I am unable to crack my sweet tooth. I wanted something to replace my winter German Chocolate Cake obsession with that would give me multiple benefits. I finally hit upon it.
The word has been out on bone broth for some time now thanks to countless celebrity endorsements of trendsetters like Gwyneth Paltrow. As an anti-aging expert and weight loss consultant, I can confirm that the magic is true! We always have something to learn from our ancestors and bone broth is no exception.
When we were a younger society living without processed and packaged foods, we had our own farms and livestock. Waste and garbage were virtually non-existent at this time because our forbears thriftily made use of everything. Livestock was food but also, leather, pillow stuffing etc. Today, most people buy parts of animals when they want to eat meat: ribs, breasts, thighs. The whole animal is discarded elsewhere. However, by participating in a faster, ‘easier’ life we are missing out on the secrets hidden within what was handed to us i.e. those mysteries locked within the perfection of nature as untouched by man. The more I learn about them, the more incredulous I am about how they have been overlooked as non-invasive or harmless solutions/cures for health and beauty!
One of the ‘secrets’ is bone broth. It is a confirmed anti-aging asset as it helps plump skin, diminish wrinkles and supports nail and hair health. It is full of all kinds of nutrients which help the gut – the seat of all wellness and digestion.
What are the Nutrients in Bone Broth?
► Collagen – The main nutrient in bone broth for skin, hair and nails is collagen! Bone broth is loaded with collagen, a protein found in the connective tissue, cartilage, bone marrow, tendons, ligaments and bones of cows, goats, sheep and other vertebrates. Collagen is what maintains skin elasticity and firmness as well as promotes smooth and supple skin.
Now I realize an article about onions is not terribly Christmassy or even sexy. However, throughout the holiday season, we all want to look our best and stay as healthy as possible and, despite their pungent aroma, the humble onion must not be overlooked. Actually, the onion, in my opinion, is less humble than a true member of the vegetable royalty.
I was drawn to write this article after a conversation with a Jordanian lady in Central Park. Our children were playing together and we were discussing the huge number of vaccinations the U.S. insists that children get – up from just a few in our childhood. We were both frothing at the mouth about the flu vaccination and its implications for destroying the immune system of our youth as well as our right to choose what our children’s bodies are pumped with. She told me that when she grew up in Jordan, when children got the flu, their parents and grandparents would slice onions and put them in the feet of socks and draw the socks on the children for the night. Apparently, it is a magical solution for fever and flu. Intrigued, I was drawn to explore further and found a list of the below benefits.
(Regarding the flu shot, if you don’t want your child to get it – just find a doctor on the same page and have them tick off the form without actually injecting your child. Stories about deaths and paralysis of children from this year’s flu shot are more and more in the news.)
If you are worried about onion breath: take a shot of vodka or hydrogen peroxide (spit out the h.p.) – both kill bacteria in the mouth, brush your teeth and tongue with baking soda and floss, rinse with water, and chew parsley or mint leaves!
Note the amazingly decadent recipe at the end of this article… Continue reading
As the summer heat wilts your skin, your smile, and your appetite, focus on cool fruit and vegetable snacks. My favorite summer skin refresher is the cucumber. The more I learn about cucumbers there more astounded I am by all of its magical properties. Who knew?!
Cucumbers, scientifically known as Cucumis sativus, belong to the same botanical family as melons (including watermelon and cantaloupe) and squashes (including summer squash, winter squash, zucchini and pumpkin). I became addicted to them thanks to the innovative cooking of the Serbian grandmother of my child. At every meal grandma serves a cucumber salad. Sometimes the cucumbers are chopped and mixed with plain yogurt, dill, lemon juice and olive oil and sometimes with mint and feta.
Cucumbers are an excellent palate cleanser and refresh the mouth and breath. (They are also a fantastic flirtation-starter for those of you who like to send a suggestive message to the opposite sex in the vegetable aisle of the store… Though some men may wilt when faced with the more intimidating specimens of Cucumis sativus, a little fondling of the impressive cucumber may rev your engines…And who knows what could happen then?)
But why are they so magical?? Here are 30 reasons:
This drink is not for the faint of heart so if you are one of those people who aren’t capable of making a big effort for beauty, youth and immunity – stop reading now.
I drink this concoction about 5x a week and yes, I gag a little during the process. My baby always watches me with great fascination while I glug back this nut-spice smoothie. But ladies, I glow, I shine and I exude health and vitality… And I might be able to crank out a baby when I am 60!
You will need a coffee bean grinder – about $20 (worldwide). Below, are the ingredients and their amazing benefits.
Put a spoonful of curcumin/turmeric, nutritional yeast, cinnamon and wheat germ in a large glass. Grind all your seeds (make certain to keep your seeds ‘oil-ripe’ by preserving in the fridge) and put in the glass. Add water and stir vigorously. Stir before every sip as well. Swallow. Because you have ground the seeds they will be more quickly and easily absorbed and digested by the body. Remember, eating solids causes the body to produce stress hormones in order to break down food…
After drinking this drink you will promptly lose your appetite for the entire day. So it is an excellent nutrition-diet (and may have laxative effects on some). Continue reading
One of the magical vitamins I have been taking for years is magnesium glycinate. My motivation was anti-aging but, the below article by Dr. Mercola will explain why magnesium is important for SO MANY other reasons.
You don’t hear much about magnesium, yet an estimated 80 percent of Americans are deficient in this important mineral and the health consequences of deficiency are significant. One reason could be because magnesium, like vitamin D, serves so many functions it’s hard to corral.
Few nutrients possess the remarkable and diverse benefits of magnesium. It is the fourth most abundant mineral in cells after calcium, phosphorus and potassium. Magnesium is found in our bones, muscles, blood, and other tissues. It is needed by the body for energy production, fat and protein synthesis, muscle relaxation, nervous system function and calcium metabolism.
According to US Department of Agriculture data, two out of every three Americans don’t meet average daily intake requirements for magnesium, which are 300 milligrams (mg) to 420 mg daily for adults. In addition, many people have a magnesium deficiency due to stress, genetics or a medication, such as a diuretic (usually taken to control blood pressure). As a consequence, these people face an increased risk for health problems. Maintaining adequate levels of magnesium can help reduce muscle cramps, stabilize blood sugar, lower the risk for heart disease, ease migraine headaches, strengthen bones and slow the aging process. Doesn’t it make sense that the foods that maintain and enhance fertility can help regulate your hormones even beyond the fertile years? The diet for conception and pregnant women is the same diet women of ALL ages should be eating. The fertility diet is the regimen which balances the endocrine system. If you want babies but haven’t yet found Mr. Right yet or the time, start making sure your body is in prime condition by taking extra care with your diet.
Beware ladies, this is a long article. I found the information so fascinating and so relevant to anti-aging that I kept adding and adding… Rest assured, taking a moment to read this will benefit you! Continue reading
My crunchy vegan friends have been harping for years about sprouting. Sprouting beans, nuts, seeds – if there was a solid crumb on the floor they’d probably snatch it up and cover it in water. I had only half an ear cocked until I met Lola.
I met her at an art opening in Paris. She was your basic nightmare – clear-skinned, gorgeous waist-length chestnut hair, mysterious long hooded green eyes, tapering fingers and lips so naturally plump they actually had that little line of cleavage that looks like a cleft in the chin… I was drawn to her and followed her surreptitiously while mulling my opening gambit and wondering if I had finally become a lesbian. (It would make sense given my recent history – but that will be a book so stay tuned…)
Finally, we both lingered in front of a particularly abstract rendition of black and red chaos. I ventured a tentative comment coupled with a flirty laugh. She responded. But I didn’t want to talk about the art. I wanted to know about her canvas – her perfect skin. What were her secrets? It’s not as if she was 30. She was older. I could tell by her walk, her attitude. This was someone that had lived. Had I finally met another vampire? Maybe we could go somewhere and share a bite…
Like everyone Lola enjoyed a compliment. A few more and she was ready to share. Her secret: sprouted beans. Lola is a vegetarian and she swore up and down about the MAGICAL results of sprouting. She sprouts beans, nuts and seeds around the clock. They are her protein, her vitamins, her enzymes – her glorious skin.
But why? But how?

Do you know how many of my 40-65 year old male friends brag to me that they have discovered the “miracle natural viagra”? Thirteen and counting so far. And that ‘viagra’ ladies, is Maca – an innocuous looking white powder that is not for snorting!
Maca is a root from Peru; it’s a tuber, like a potato, and offers an amazing energy boost for those with low energy. Maca however, unlike coffee, offers energy in a non-caffeinated way that supports the body. It is a nutritionally dense super-food that contains high amounts of minerals, vitamins, enzymes and all of the essential amino acids. Maca root is rich in B-vitamins, which power all processes in the body, and maca is a vegetarian source of B-12. To boot, maca has high levels of bioavailable calcium and magnesium and is great for the remineralization of your body. Don’t forget that our soil has been badly depleted of minerals thanks to large-scale farming and fertilizers. A tomato today is not as rife with minerals as the tomatoes our grandparents ate!
