I must apologize for my long absence. In fact, I have been wildly busy launching a skincream line SASKI. I have all of you to thank for inspiring me to make the line. I had so many requests from readers, friends and even former business associates that I finally embraced the challenge!
My line is not your average line because it does not sit on a shelf aging! It is made fresh and on command after an interview with a member of the SASKI team! Our proprietary questionnaire, developed after years of observation and research, is extremely thorough. Nothing is overlooked. Based upon this interview, SASKI’s resident white sorceress (me!) develops a formulation. The next step is to order the ingredients and to mix the magic. Because SASKI takes some time and is made to measure, it is really ‘haute couture for your skin’. SASKI products must be refrigerated to order to maintain maximum efficacy.
SASKI’s focus on non-chemical/synthetic ingredients appeals to a niche customer who is highly educated and willing to wait in order to have a product customized to them.
As a certified nutritionist, I believe that what you put on your skin, your largest organ, is as important as what you eat or drink. Creams are absorbed easily into the skin and, from there; enter the bloodstream to be carried throughout the body. Product ingredients build up over time adding to the onslaught of chemicals we absorb daily from the air, food, water etc. The amalgamation of routine pollutants can lead to: cancer, fertility issues, rapid aging, dull and spotted skin and more. SASKI products empower and protect. Continue reading →
Recently, I was googling vain women of history and came across two who (strangely) share a similar name, nearly the same length of reign and an obsession with their beauty. They are the Empress Dowager of China, Queen Cixi, who ruled for forty eight years and the Empress of Austria, Queen Sisi, who ruled for forty four years. Both left a legacy of beauty secrets though today, I will only look at Cixi.
Cixi entered the Qing palace at the age of seventeen as a xiunu, the lowest-ranking of imperial concubines, and rose to the position of empress dowager on the death of Emperor Xianfeng. She held the reins of political power for forty eight years and was the key figure leading to the downfall of the Qing Dynasty. Continue reading →
My mother always told me to never discuss my Serbian roots. “People will think you are dangerous,” she would whisper with narowed eyes. While it is true that the Serbs are a feisty race one cannot deny their beauty, survival skills, their passion for life and their weapon-sharp minds!
My glamorous Serbian grandmother who never went to bed without a perfectly made up face (if she died in her sleep she wanted to be found looking beautiful) always had a stash of homemade ajvar on hand. She swore that the vitamin C in the red peppers was responsible for her impeccable complexion and wrinkle-free skin.
Ajvar is a type of relish, made principally from red bell peppers, with garlic. It may also contain eggplant and chili. Ajvar originates in the Serbian cuisine, and was therefore long known as “Serbian salad” or “Serbian vegetable caviar”. It became a popular salad (side dish) throughout Yugoslavia after World War II and is nowadays popular in the Balkans. Original homemade ajvar is made of roasted peppers, while some industrial producers use cooked peppers, which leads to a lower quality. Depending on the capsaicin content in bell peppers and the amount of added chili peppers, it can be sweet (traditional), piquant (the most common), or very hot. Continue reading →
This facial scrub is so delicious you will want to eat it! To begin, rinse your face and neck with warm water and then gently apply the mask in gentle, circular motions. When you are done, rinse with icy cold water – but don’t wash with any face cleaner. You will want to leave it on for the night.
3 tablespoons sugar a great scrub to remove dead cells and make way for new ones
4 tablespoons olive oil – soothing and moisturizing
2 tablespoons honey – antibiotic and soothing
Juice from half a lemon – citric acids clears away old skin allowing for regeneration
Nutritional yeast looks like wheat germ and tastes like a nutty, flaky, grated cheddar cheese. It is made from a single celled organism sporting the impressive name: Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, which is grown on molasses and then harvested, washed and dried with heat to kill or ‘deactivate’ it. Because it is inactive, it doesn’t froth or grow like baking yeast. Don’t confuse it with Brewar’s Yeast as it has nothing in common AND, it will not give you a yeast infection (as many misguided people believe!). Continue reading →
In order for your body to take advantage of all the nutrients you ingest, it is important that you keep your insides clean. Our immune system is largely contained within our bowels. Good health begins in the gut.
We live in a toxic environment; from pesticides and strange ingredients in our food, to polluted air, harsh chemicals in our cleaning and beauty products, prescription drugs and excessive stress. Ninety percent of these toxins enter your bloodstream through the intestinal tract. Toxins suppress the natural, self-healing mechanisms in our body. Our poor liver gets overloaded, trying to do its main job of keeping the body clean and functional. If it can’t keep up, many of the body’s systems begin to malfunction. Continue reading →
I have dissected a few bodies in my time but could never face a close-up of the inside of a human skull. Perhaps this hesitation explains why I have never had a taste for cauliflower which looks like an albino version of a brain wrapped prettily in a base of green leaves.
However, once I understood the super-charged powers of this remarkable cruciferous veggie – I embraced it – along with the numerous creative ways one can serve it up. Continue reading →
Eggs contain a number of powerful skin-friendly nutrients:
Selenium – the wonder mineral of anti-aging is very present in eggs and promotes tighter skin
Choline – protects the fat structures of cell membranes which make skin more flexible. Without this flexibility skin can crack and wrinkle. In addition, choline helps in the overall functioning of cells assisting in such functions as transporting nutrients in the body and maintaining proper levels of vitamin B which produces energy in the skin which means elastin and collagen production are constant. While we do produce some choline naturally we need more – two a day will give us 50% of what we need. Continue reading →
So many girls I know won’t eat avocados out of fear that they will make them fat. But eating avocados is like feeding eggs to a show dog. Everything will gleam apres! I eat avocados daily and am far from fat!
Avocados contain the kind of fat that is critical to anti-aging and great skin – polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. These fats help your skin to retain moisture. Without moisture our body functionality and metabolic processes are reduced leading to inflammation, puffiness and a decrease in the release of toxins. But avocados contain even more beneficial advantages: Continue reading →
