Spring Clean Your Body – Detox Easily by Spacing Mealtimes Out as Long as Possible

Springtime is here!  The tulips and cherry blossoms are out in force along with the snails who accompany those regular spring showers…   But along with the flowers comes that inevitable itch to rid the house of those winter dust balls hidden behind the couch and the ancient fingerprints that patchwork the windows and light switches.

Ah – the joy of spring cleaning!  (Grrr) I spent all of yesterday in my underwear cleaning furiously while blasting Kylie Minogue’s Fever album.  Unfortunately, I am more of a seasonal scrubber since I have far too little time to make a day-to-day art of it.   But, as I cleaned I had to ask myself, wouldn’t this have been less work if I had been more organized?

The same philosophy applies to the cleaning of one’s body.  In an age where we are under many pressures and combining a busy work and home life, it is easy to be careless about our eating habits.   Under pressure we may munch on acid forming foods or drinks throughout the day or drink too much coffee or exercise less.  These habits create stress on the body’s ability to detoxify itself making it more acidic and inflamed.  Poor detoxification can lead to aging, cancer, diabetes, weight gain and even (as epigenetics tell us) worse genes for our future offspring.

However, with a little organization and discipline, your body actually detoxes itself.  Yep.   As the wonderful Dr. Alejandro Junger says in his book Clean:

“When the digestive tract isn’t constantly needing to work to process food, the body can direct energy towards detox and repair.  Making sure your meals are full of fat and protein keeps you from needing to constantly graze and keeps blood sugar levels stable.  It also allows the body to go into fat-burning mode more easily, which releases more stubborn toxins stored in fat cells.” Continue reading

Can Hair Dyes Cause Cancer? Some Organic Options

After seeing Amy Adams in American Hustle I knew it was time to go red – again.   I have some natural red in the genes (Grandpa Tom was a true redhead) but the winter really turns up the mousy-brown in my luscious locks.  I brought several bottles of red dye with me to Geneva from NY 3.5 years ago but have no clue what the shelf life is.  I began to wonder – is this stuff cancer causing?  Which led me to the below article from Good Housekeeping and several purchases on the internet.  I am still waiting for them to arrive so I can’t update you on the products yet.  But stay tuned ladies. Beauty Secrets from the Empress Dowager of China – Queen Cixi

Recently, I was googling vain women of history and came across two who (strangely) share a similar name, nearly the same length of reign and an obsession with their beauty.  They are the Empress Dowager of China, Queen Cixi, who ruled for forty eight years and the Empress of Austria, Queen Sisi, who ruled for forty four years.  Both left a legacy of beauty secrets though today, I will only look at Cixi.

Cixi entered the Qing palace at the age of seventeen as a xiunu, the lowest-ranking of imperial concubines, and rose to the position of empress dowager on the death of Emperor Xianfeng.  She held the reins of political power for forty eight years and was the key figure leading to the downfall of the Qing Dynasty. Get Addicted to Needles and Roll Your Way to Firmer Skin (knees and face especially!)

I awaken the S&M in me every Tuesday night.   Unfortunately, I play both Master and Servant and the act usually takes place while I am fully clothed.  My instrument of torture?  The micro-needle roller (the generic hence, cheaper, version of the famed dermaroller).

Many of my girlfriends hesitate to buy one for themselves and insist on allowing only their facialist to apply it in a session.  The reason?  The facialist earnestly warns them that only a professional should roll as you may risk injury.  This is utter nonsense!  No one knows you better than you eh?  Personally, I know my pain threshold is high and so I push my micro-needle roller deep into my skin with rhythmic thrusts and strokes (that’s right ladies, you must GET INTO it for results)… Continue reading
